Design Not Illustration Contest

DNI (Design Not Illustration) was a challenge to design something for a t-shirt that is interesting visually that has no illustration to it at all. It had to be made up of Color, Form, Shape, Line and/or Pattern. It was about Abstract Art that doesn't rely on a real or cartoon visual. To learn more about Design Not Illustration check out bortwein's original blog, and check out the winning designs here.

SUBMISSION REVOLUTION: December 1st 2005
Please note this is not in response to the threadless staff, judges or shirts that have been chosen.
It is an effort to change the shirts that can be chosen FROM, because winning designs have a tendency to dictate future submissions, and therefore, future winners. ..and we feel like we are at the point where we are looking at copies of copies of copies of inspirations.
We want to make it more fun to look through submissions, and harder to decide. We want change from stale, hack submissions.
A few of us are going to try to take tee design back to the simple, the elemental, the symbolic, the esoteric, the personal, and perhaps the more fashionable. I realize, as the king of cartoons, that this sounds odd coming from me, but trust me, I have more up my sleeve.
We are setting a date- December 1st or the week of- to submit these designs in an attempt to flood the subs with the alternative, which used to be the mainstream, but have been usurped by pop culture nonsense and heavy-handed (badly done, or in lieu of actual ability) vectoring.
Submit your sketches. Submit your dreams. Submit your iconography. Submit logos for non-existant factions. Submit images and situations that mean nothing at all and can't be explained by a witty title.
the rules are simple. design what YOU like.
I personally suggest not using an animal JUST to be cute or funny and no faceless people that are detailed in every other way, but i won't say no hearts or skulls because i know some of us can use them creatively.
Limiting yourself to one or two colors is not only a fun challenge, but more in keeping with our basic idea. Three good colors would be great. Don't settle for a realistic palette. Don't be afraid of text, but use it inventively, or at least cohesively!
I personally will shoot to have 5 by the due date. good luck, and god help us all.
mission statement- cut and paste if you want to use it:
This design is my own personal attempt at submitting art that I like and would gladly wear. Whether or not the result uses common imagery or ideas, I have attempted to use them in a new context, or way that fits me. I have not designed this shirt to try to please a select crowd or lifestyle. I have not gone for the popular or safe route as I may have in an attempt to secure votes. It is not a cry for attention or effort to get laughs. This is my design submission, and I think it would look great on a t-shirt.
